Tips to Help You Grow Old Slowly and Gracefully

The term old as it pertains to a person's age has certainly changed over the last 40 years. At one time once you hit 50 you were considered an old person. That's because life expectancy back then was much lower than it is today. Now it is not uncommon for those approaching 60 to not consider themselves as old. Certainly with the health advances that have been made, the life expectancy of a human being has increased approximately 20 years.

Even with all the advances that have been made in medicine, people still grow old. No matter whom you are if you live long enough you will get elderly. Even so, we can grow old and do it gracefully if we take care of ourselves. Good health is mostly common sense, but we can all use a few tips from time to time. With that in mind here are a few tips to help you go into the Golden years with a smile on your face.

As stated earlier taking care of yourself is mostly a common sense undertaking. One of the things you can do to help extend your life as well as keep your skin looking younger is to avoid smoking. If that all possible you should even avoid secondhand smoke as this has been shown to be harmful to you as well. If you smoke you should quit right away. If you frequent areas where there is a lot of secondhand smoke you may want to rethink your decision to go to these places.

If you have a weight issue then it would be to your advantage to lose a few pounds and try to get to your ideal weight. If you do not know what your ideal weight is then you should ask your physician. Your physician can tell you what you should weigh for your particular body type. Being overweight is not only causes extra wear and tear on your joints; it also opens you up to the possibility of contracting diabetes. A leaner you is a healthier you.

You may also want to take vitamin supplements to ensure that your body is getting the proper nutrition it needs in its later years. You can consult with your physician and he will be happy to tell you which supplements would best serve you. Getting extra calcium would be one way to help strengthen the bones at a time when osteoporosis can be a problem. The extra calcium can be obtained either through supplements or an increased intake of calcium rich foods.

Getting enough exercise is one way that you can both get leaner and also boost your energy levels. Walking is an excellent exercise for the older person. Walking puts very little stress on the body and can be done almost anywhere. It requires no special equipment so there is no cost involved in this particular exercise regimen.
