Turmeric Root Extract (Curcumin)

Curcumin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflamatory molecule found in turmeric and responsible for tumeric's orange-golden hue.  Curcumin is the primary ingredient in tumeric and responsible for many of its health effects, and is 3% of tumeric by weight. Curcumin has been a heavily researched supplement given it's many health benefits.

Curcumin's antioxidant activities include scavenging different forms of free radicals, both oxygen and nitrogen, modulating the activity of enzymes active in neutralizing free radicals like catalase and SOD enzymes, and inhibiting enzymes that produce reactive oxygen species.

Curcumin's anti-inflammatory effects are through inhibiting key enzymes that mediate the inflammatory process and downregulating the expression of various proinflammatory cytokines through inactivating the transcription factor NF-kappaB.

For all the benefits it provides, curcumin is poorly bioavailable when taken by mouth due to poor absorption, rapid metabolism, and rapid elimination. One strategy to boost it's levels in the body is to take it with piperine, which increases availability in the body up to 2000%. It is fat soluble, so eating curcumin with a meal improves absorption.
